Market Snapshot

The North American marine composites market is anchored by recreational boat OEMs concentrated in Tennessee, Florida, South Carolina, and the Great Lakes states. Annual composite consumption is dominated by hull and deck laminates, which are produced in-house at the OEM plant rather than sourced from independent Tier 1 molders.

Volume flows through a small number of chemical companies for resins and gelcoats, a fragmented group of core and reinforcement suppliers, and three domestic glass fiber producers. Composites One functions as the route to market for most small and mid-size builders.

How the Marine Supply Chain Is Structured

Marine composites do not follow the automotive Tier 1 / Tier 2 pattern. Hull and deck lamination is almost universally done in-house at the OEM plant. What Tier 1 means in marine is component molding: hardtops, canvas, glazing, hatches, and interior parts.

Tier 2 in marine is materials: unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester resins, gelcoat, structured reinforcements, and foam or composite cores. Tier 3 is glass fiber production, which is a three-supplier oligopoly in North America: Owens Corning, Johns Manville, and Jushi.

OEM Landscape

Three groups anchor demand. Brunswick Corporation is the largest, running an in-house lamination program across Sea Ray, Boston Whaler, Bayliner, Lund, Crestliner, and Harris. Malibu Boats operates the Malibu, Axis, Pursuit, Cobalt, and Maverick brands from its Tennessee base. Correct Craft owns Nautique, Bass Cat, and Yar-Craft, with its center of gravity in central Florida.

The full roster of North American boat OEMs building in composites, including mid and small brands beyond these three anchors, is in the gated portion of this report.
